Fried Onions are ready to eat but are also a staple in the green bean casserole and can easily be served with hamburgers, soups, or casseroles!
These onions are fried in butter, sprinkled with flour, and fried to perfection. They are so good, it is impossible to eat just one!
What is Fried Onions?
French fried onions are not a French dish but are from the US. These crispy small pieces are great to be added to all kinds of dishes!
These fried onions are similar to onion rings but are much thinner and lighter in color.
This recipe is different from caramelized onions (soft and sweet), they are quickly fried to make them crisp.
Both cheap and delicious, these onions can add zest and crunch to anything.
This recipe uses a few ingredients that you may have.
Ingredients & Variations
Onions: Many varieties of onions, but the best fried onions are white and yellow varieties. For a delicious version, try red or Walla Walla onions.
BUTTERMILK: Greasing the onion in buttermilk will soften the onions, remove the ‘bite’ slightly, and help the flour stick to the onion. If you do not have it, it is easy to make buttermilk instead.
DIFFERENCES: Add cornmeal to the flour to give the onions a little crumb. Or rub the cornflakes and sprinkle with flour.

Storing Leftover Crispy onions
Any residue can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container for 4 days. Heat again in the oven or pan on the stove (microwave is not good, it will embarrass them).
They can also be frozen, making them ideal for adding soups and stews. Freeze in a ziplock bag or airtight container for 1-3 months.
